Lecture Series
The Foundation has established a Kapila & Nirmal Hingorani Memorial Lecture series at New Delhi, to be held on January 11 each year (known as the PIL Day) - the day Kapila Hingorani and Nirmal Hingorani filed the first Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court of India in the year 1979, i.e. Hussainara Khatoon versus State of Bihar.

The First Kapila Hingorani Memorial Lecture was held at the Teen Murti Auditorium, Delhi on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 4:00 pm. In view of the significance of the day for the criminal justice system in India, the theme for the 2015 Lecture was "Evolving Standards for a Humane Criminal Justice System". The Memorial Lecture was delivered by Hon'ble Mr. Justice T. S. Thakur, then Judge, Supreme Court of India, and presently the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, with Remembrances by Hon'ble Ms. Justice Leila Seth, Former Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh High Court, Professor Clark D. Cunningham, W. Lee Burge Professor of Law & Ethics, Georgia State University, College of Law. The remembrance message of Mr. Fali Nariman, Senior Advocate and President, Emeritus, The Bar Association of India, who could not be present, was read out by Ms. Priya Hingorani, Advocate.

The Second Kapila & Nirmal Hingorani Memorial Lecture 2016 was held at the Teen Murti Auditorium, Delhi on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 4:30 pm. The theme for the 2016 Lecture was "Moving Towards an Egalitarian Society". The Memorial Lecture was delivered by Hon'ble Mr. Justice J. S. Khehar, Judge, Supreme Court of India, with Special Addresses by Ms. Brinda Karat, Polit Bureau Member, CPI (M) and Former Member, Rajya Sabha, and Mr. Shekhar Gupta, Chairman & Founding Editor, Mediascape Group. The Vote of Thanks was given by Ms. Priya Hingorani, Advocate.

Symposiums/Talks

  • The Foundation organised a Symposium on "Best Practices and Lessons learned in Combating Gender Violence - US and India Perspective" on August 18, 2015 at the Indian Law Institute, New Delhi. The Symposium was chaired by Ms. Indira Jaising, Former ASG and Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India. The keynote speaker was Ms. Vivian Huelgo, Chief Counsel, Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence, American Bar Association. Special Addresses were delivered by Ms. Amarjeet Kaur, National Convenor, All India Working Women Forum; Vice President, National Federation of Indian Women; and Ms. Nirmala Fenn, Social Activist and Former National President, YWCA, India. The welcome address on behalf of the Foundation was given by Ms. Priya Hingorani, Advocate.

  • The Foundation, in collaboration with the National Law University, Delhi, organised a Symposium on "Moving towards a victim-oriented Criminal Justice System" on September 15, 2015 at the University. The speakers were Oscar Del Fabro, Barrister, Dr. Craig Paterson, Professor of Law, Sheffield Hallam University; Professor B. B. Pande, Professor of Law, NLU, Delhi; Professor G. S. Bajpai, Registrar, NLU, Delhi and Dr. Aman Hingorani, Advocate.

  • The Foundation organised a talk by Mr. Sital Dhillion, Barrister and Head of Department of Law and Criminology, Sheffield Hallam University, on "Counter Terrorism and Human Rights" on September 15, 2015 at the NLU, Delhi.

Scholarships/Internships

  • The Foundation structured and ran The Kapila Hingorani Public Interest Litigation Internship 2015 at New Delhi for Mr. Benjamin Havard, LLM student from Law School, University of Warwick, from April 26, 2015 to May 16, 2015. The Internee engaged with NGOs active in the field of environment law, attended lectures at NLU, Delhi, met lawyers specialising in the field, visited the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court, and attended proceedings at the National Green Tribunal, Delhi.
    Mr. Davide Cerrato, LLM student at the School of Law, University of Warwick has been awarded this Internship for 2016.

  • The Foundation hosted Mr. Richard Evans, Barrister, who was nominated by the Pegasus Trust, London, for The Kapila Hingorani Foundation Pegasus Trust Scholarship from November 5, 2015 to December 4, 2015. The Foundation arranged for Mr. Evans to be placed with Mr. Colin Gonsalves, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India and also provided him with an opportunity to engage with NGOs involved in the field of human rights and criminal law. The Foundation’s nominee for The Kapila Hingorani Foundation Pegasus Scholarship 2015, Mr. Bipin Pradip Aspatwar, will be undergoing his placement during January-March 2016 and will be placed by the Pegasus Trust in the chambers of Barristers in London.
    Ms. Joanna Hastie, Barrister, has been nominated by the Pegasus Trust, London to be the scholar for 2016.

  • The Foundation awarded The Kapila Hingorani Scholarship, 2015 to Ms. Nandini Maharaj, LSR College, New Delhi for the MA in Applied Human Rights at the Helena Kennedy Centre, Sheffield Hallam University, U.K.
