About the Foundation

The Kapila & Nirmal Hingorani Foundation has been set up by the family of Kapila & Nirmal Hingorani as a public charitable trust to carry forward the work undertaken by them in the field of public interest law, human rights, access to justice, legal education and related areas.

The aims and objects of the Foundation include the following:

  • to work for the realization of human rights and freedoms, equality and dignity of the individual, particularly of women, children, the aged, the poor and other weaker sections of society;
  • to organize working groups, seminars, conferences and other fora for exchange of views on legal and other issues related to the protection of human rights and strengthening of civil society, democracy and the rule of law;
  • to develop links with, collaborate or tie up with any institution, university, college or school in India and/or abroad to facilitate research in public interest law, human rights and related fields, to organize lectures and academic courses, to establish exchange programs and training of legal professionals and students, including providing grants, stipends and other financial assistance therefor, and to undertake any other activities to further the objects of the Foundation;
  • to grant, pay or give scholarship, stipends, prizes, rewards, allowance and other financial assistance in cash or in kind to deserving professionals, students and other individuals with a view to helping them develop their skills and/or pursue their studies in India or abroad;
  • to obtain, provide and disseminate information and to promote awareness in fields in which the Foundation is active using private and public media, including by bringing out publications;
  • to give, provide and/or render help and assistance in cash or in kind to aged, poor, destitute and/or needy persons and make available to them legal aid, medical treatment and care, facilities and services;
  • to establish, run, support and/or grant aid or other assistance in cash or in kind to schools, colleges, libraries, universities, laboratories, research centres and other institutions of the like nature for the promotion of research, development, education and training and diffusion of knowledge amongst the public in general;
  • to render assistance, both directly and through existing social welfare organizations, for appropriate literacy, educational and vocational training programs;
  • to give, provide and/or render monetary and/or other help and assistance for the relief of persons and animals affected by natural and other calamities such as flood, fire, famine, cyclone, earthquake, storm, accident, pestilence, drought, epidemic, and the like, to give donations, subscriptions or contributions to institutions, establishments, centres or persons doing relief work on such occasions;
  • to open, found, establish, promote, set-up, run, maintain, assist, finance, support and/or aid or help in the setting up and/or maintaining and/or running hospitals, dispensaries, child welfare centres, homes for women, for children and for the aged, institutions for persons with special needs and other charitable institutions for the benefit and use of the general public;
  • to promote, support and/or grant aid to any institution, society or organization, with objects similar in nature to those of the Foundation;
  • to set up and administer other institutes in furtherance of the objects of the Foundation; and
  • to mobilize funds, donations and contributions to finance the activities of the Foundation and towards this end to take up fundraising activities in India and abroad.
